It's really amazing where you find inspiration. I was thinking about how much I love softball, but I don't really know how to convey it. Then I went to watch the team my brother coaches in volleyball. They are 7th grade girls, and he's trying to teach them the game right. Not to just go out there and hit the ball, but working on the fundamentals.
Walking into the gym was insane. Their game hadn't started, but the girls who were playing were so excited over even success. Each point the would squeal in a horribly high pitch, I wanted to clutch my ears to stop them from bleeding. However, their enthusiasm was easy to feel.
Watching my brother's team play such a great experience. It was the first time I've been to a youth sporting event in I don't know how long. To see the team react and respond to how they play. To watch these girls try to employ strategy and understand the game. To see how much they played the game because they enjoyed it. After being so wrapped up in pro sports, and even college level sports, which is just a stepping stone into the pros, watching these girls play was refreshing, because they were there giving it their all, and still took something from the game.
They didn't win, but that didn't take anything away from them. They get that it's a game, they get where the value lies. Victory can be celebrated, but only because victory is the end result of playing well. The girls celebrated their good plays, and even when something didn't go their way, they would "Get low" and be ready for the next serve.
So, every chance you get, go see a youth sporting event. It's cheaper, and you're going to see something much better than the game, you're going to see what it all means, and what it's all about. Forget the pros, they are lost in the business of entertainment! Go see some real sports!
